I planted twelve of these...

...and all I got to bloom was one. Hyacinths are usually one of the easiest bulbs to force into early bloom. I've done it before.

I put them in the refrigerator for ten weeks as recommended, potted them up, but only one gave me the goods.

Does that make me a bad gardener?

No, *sigh*, just a gardener.

Well the one you got to bloom is quite lovely.

Thanks! and the scent is pretty great. 12 might have been overpowering.

The hyacinth is called 'Delft Blue'

Did you just put them in the fridge or in soil in the fridge? I've found that they really don't work if you just put them in the fridge and pot them up later.

Since I have had success before, then I blame this crap refrigerator here in my new apartment. It is a 1980s model that freezes arugula and spoils milk, automatically.

I will certainly try the soil method next time CK

In the old days I could have recommended to people to keep a special bulb-designated refrigerator (a Miehle or some such) with climate controlled zones that mimicked the habitats of each type of forced bulb. Damned Madoff!
