Garden Modernism?

Watching Mon Oncle, the Jacques Tati movie, I was thinking how many people would still refer to this garden as "modern". And for a Carrie Bradshaw-type journalistic question...why is our popular concept of modern a relic from a time half a century ago?

I learned a French landscape term for the irregularly placed stepping stones or pavers that are used to comic effect in this movie. They are called pas japonais (Japanese footsteps). What an excellent phrase to casually toss off at a bbq this summer.
